My Sister’s Keeper: Laura Ling and Euna Lee

Filed under: Uncategorized — Felicia @ 11:00 am

Former President Bill Clinton (and brother of Phi Beta Sigma, fraternity – I’m still bugging from that) has recently met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il in an attempt to discuss the possible release of US journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee; Lee and LingLing is the sister to famous journalist Lisa Ling.

The women have been held prisoners since June 8, 2009 for illegal border crossing and there doesn’t seem to be any signs of an early discharge in the immediate future. On June 16th, it was said that both women have “admitted and accepted their guilt”; however in my opinion this confession may have been forced out of them. The women have been sentenced to 12 years of hard labor as punishment.

Last month Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has spoken on the women’s behalf in an attempt of reprieve for the two women. As a journalist away on assignment you really have to go above and beyond to get the story while not compromising your safety or breaking that country’s laws. In this case although it may not have been their intention to cross over to North Korea, it still happened and it’s really difficult to decide which direction to place the blame. While disciplinary action is expected, 12 years of being overworked, beaten and given an inadequate supply of food is a little overboard.

Update: North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has given a pardon to both Laura Ling and Euna Lee today! Was it due to Bill Clinton’s private visit? Who knows…but I’m really happy for those two women!
