Song: “Giving You The Best That I Got”

Album: Giving You The Best That I Got (1988)

Label: Elektra

I can seriously go on and on about Ms. Baker. I’m such a fan like no other. I felt so disappointed to learn that she performed at Radio City Hall this past February and I completely missed it.

It was really hard to choose one song from her long catalog of titles, but I decided to go with “Giving You The Best That I Got” for this morning’s flash-back. The album of the same title was released in ’88. I first heard this song around the mid-late 90’s and instantly fell in love. Giving You The Best That I Got"

Ms. Baker speaks the truth with the line, “everybody’s got opinions, about the way they think our story’s gonna end…”. This is such a song that intensifies the love that two people have for one another. Even the line “I bet everything on my wedding ring” is so striking to me.

Check out the vid below from her Radio City performance:

  1. I still get laughed at when I tell people that I love Anita Baker. I have all her albums, on cassette of course (lol). I think she is an underated singer. Her voice is unmatched. Not only does she have a commanding stage personality, but she knows how to allow herself to feel and breathe every word of her songs. She believes in the stories of her songs and when she lifts her chest (or breast) and sway her hips to the rhythm of her songs, it’s hard not to be captivated. I am yet to see her perform live though – such a shame. (BTW: She rocks her hairstyles).
