Sorry, Your Name Is NOT On “The List”

Earlier in the week I attended an album release party for Mims, who’s new album Guilt just came out in stores. There were a couple tracks that were actually pretty good. Seems he’s trying to get that “ringtone rapper” stigma detached from his name. My review for that will follow in the coming days.  Guilt

What I wanted to talk about was these VIP/Guest lists that folks send out. Some of these things don’t always guarantee entrance into the venue. Remember my story recently about the place I attempted to get into and they didn’t receive my RSVP? Slightly different scenario, but the story is still similar. The album release was held at Citrine Lounge here in the city. Again, another freezing cold night for spring. Since I was there on assignment and not for fun, I was placed on a list with a plus one. Apparently almost everybody in the surprisingly long line was under the impression that they were definitely getting in that night…little did they know that was absolutely not the case.

So I waited for my girlfriend to arrive so we can walk in together. It avoids me having to go in, then fuss to come back out and explain to the person with the list that my + 1 has arrived. That whole time the line was at a standstill and folks were wondering why it wasn’t moving. I’m not above waiting in lines but, come on…; So as she arrived, we made our way towards the front of the line only to discover that folks who spent more than half an hour waiting to catch a glimpse of the 5-foot rapper were getting turned away. I really felt for them, because it sucks when you go home, put on your favorite tight jeans, your Jordans, your spiffiest tight t-shirt and shades in hopes of finding a ‘drunk and hot girl’ for the night (yea, that description was actually in reference to the guys). People were getting really diva-ish saying things like“I RSVP’d, what you mean my name ain’t on the list”? So I walked up to the nice young lady, smile on my face and said “Felicia B with…., here with my plus one”. Checked her list, found my name and let us both in.

Not gonna lie, it feels kinda cool to just glide past the big red rope when other folks are going ape-shit to get in, lol. Unfortunately that stuff happens to us all. Its happened to me and several other people I know (come to think of it, just about everyone I know has been hit with the “sorry, your name is not on the list” line). My words of advice? I don’t have any actually. When you’re not on the list you’re just not on the list. However I would avoid putting all my confidence on those party promotion emails that get sent to thousands of subscribers.

It’s better to have a direct name and contact number of someone at the venue who can assure your entry. Check out the lead single below from Mims’ album to see what all the fuss was about that night (and to see if you would have really spent a few hours of your life waiting in line only to get turned away):

  1. I felt the same way when I used to bartend, its almost as if you are balancing 4+ sets of eyeballs on your waist the way people stare as you walk past them. What ARE you doing at the club at 9pm anyway? lol Getting turned away has never happened to me, but in New York it would add extra insult to injury, if it happened anytime between November and April.

  4. Situations like these are messed up and give the promoters a bad name. But, you are right Felicia. Just because you RSVP don’t guarantee your entry at all. And the ‘drunk and hot girl’ bit is hilarious LOL.
